Results WEEK 1
T Ball
Mets
The Mets T-Ballers had a fantastic start to the game with great fielding between Kaine Denyer and James Gray, what a team these two were together. Their quick retrieval and throwing, catching of the ball straight away got two players out. Any butterflies the kids had in their tummies soon flew away and the excitement and enthusiasm from the first match soon took hold. The Mets t-ballers were sadly defeated by some great play by the Yankees. However, the Mets team remains strong and is looking forward to their next match ahead of them.
Athletics vs. Cubs
The 1st game of the season for both teams was played with great enthusiasm and effort!
Considering the ages of these tiny stars they all coped amazingly!!
As expected, both teams needed the 1st innings to overcome the pressure of performing in front of the crowd on the big day but after being assured that having fun was their main goal they couldn’t be stopped!
I think our batting was exceptional! but quite evenly matched by the Cubs which meant 5 runs were scored in each innings before fielders managed to get any 3 batters out resulting in a final score of 20 runs each team! (a draw). Picking heroes of the game would be near impossible as every member of the Athletics (some quite new to the game) acted with sportsmanship and courage so are ALL heroes if you ask me!
Yankees V Mets
The first Yankees match was a real team effort made up of 5 Yankees Viqui, Haydn, Oliver, Nathan and Owen, Martin and Jake of the Cubs, Callum from Athletics and Tom from the Mets. They all played their part, with some excellent batting and fielding, in a really exciting match and worked well together as a team. There were lots of enthusiasm from the children and parents of both teams.
AAA
"The triple A Athletics played a hard fought game that ended with the Red Sox winning 28-24. It was a thrilling end where the Athletics needed just one more out in the bottom of the 6th to have clinched a tie game. Sam Holt hit the first home run of the season with a two run shot over the centre field fence in the 2nd inning and added a bases loaded double in the 4th for 3 RBIs. Kieran Foggarty went 2-3 and added some great defensive plays in the field.
Minor League Games
Mets Vs Yankees
WOW!! what more can any coach want from their team in the first game of a new season, I had hoped that the team would find their natural places and slot in together fairly quickly, but to play like they did this weekend would make any coach proud. The four new additions to the team, Jo, Liam, Josh and Max didn't let the pressure get to them and they handled themselves fantastically, the original players from last year have taken these kids into their hearts and have already forged friendships that I hope will go onwards for many seasons,
When we heard that the first game was against the Yankees my heart dropped, a great coach and great kids make a hard to beat package and i didn't want the kids disappointed by a first game loss, through grit and determination they pulled together and i can honestly say, hand on heart that this was probably the best game that we have ever played, Andrew as short stop sprinting for every play, Alex on second giving it his all, Big Chris and Big Tom going all out as catchers and on third, Sam S, Sammy Hammy, Sam B, Jamie, Elliot and Shaban all batting well and scoring the runs. Every child had a personal target to reach and everybody made it, a proud day for the team, the parents and the coaches. Thank you, Coach Steve.
The game between the Red Sox and the Athletics was a good game, quite tight, but the Athletics won with a final score of 10-5 (I think). The Red Sox made some good catches, both Harry and Austin, in catcher’s positions made catches. There was also some great hitting, particularly Charlie.
However the whole team played well including our newest and youngest player, Dennon who made some great plays.
The second game for the minor league was Red Sox V the A’s, with the A’s starting the batting. The A’s got off to a good start getting 2 runs in the top of the 1st. The Red Sox pulled a run back in the bottom of the 2nd, but there innings ended when Will Anderson made a great catch at shortstop. By the third innings things where still close with the A’s just in front by 3 runs to 1.
Top of the 4th and up steps Adam Tod to hit the only Home run of the game, helping the A’s to another 5 runs, not to be outdone Will Anderson gets a double on 3rd base in the bottom of the 4th. The A’s went on to win 10-4 with a great all-round performance from Tom Johnston getting a catch in the bottom of the 5th and scoring 2 runs. A great start to the season also for the A’s rookie Sian Collinson getting 2 RBI’s on her 1st outing.
Major Leagues
Red Sox VS Athletics
The Athletics hit the ground running on Saturday against the Red Sox scoring 9 runs in the first 2 innings without reply.
Runs were scored by Zack and Ben Chambers, Guy Packham, Joe Taylor, Jacob Waller and Simon Lawrence.
The main heroes however were the pitchers and catchers – Guy Packham, Joe Taylor, Aaron Webster and Matthew Sampford.
They were backed up in the field by the superb Zack Chambers at shortstop as the Red Sox fought back from 9 – 0 down to 9 – 7.
At the end the team held on to celebrate a superb victory against a strong opponent in a game played in a fantastic spirit.
Overall it was an awesome performance by the whole team with outfielders Adam Gurcan, Liam Collinson and Harry Garman fully playing their part.
We had a rough start and found ourselves facing 9-0 down early from the first 2 innings and having to adjust to different situations. Then it all started to get in synch. Bryn who had not even wore any of the catchers kit before (maybe he did not know before the game what a catcher was!) gave us an amazing game covering the position. And again I like to stress, he played one of the most difficult positions to play at baseball as if he has played 13 years there! It was his first game! (Nobody would believe that!) What a fantastic athlete he is! Miguel settled down after a rough start pitching and started striking out and hanging zeros on the board. Adam and Dan, also started a bit confused but then like Miguel started showing the leadership they all have as veterans and came back making key plays. Adam, what a catch on the 3th for that double play that I think was the turning point! And then, what a closer. I think you clocked 60MPH at some point and of course subsequent zeroes on the board. Bas and George are the discoveries of the season! Bas was as expected solid at first base and I am telling you and I am not exaggerating, I have seen him playing just once but I can tell you already that he is the best 1st baseman in the league. George Penfold (you were right Mike, what an arm!), he played mostly on 3rd base and got a 100% fielding percentage getting everything in his area and throwing bullets to 1st base and getting the important outs. Sam and Joseph: what can I say, they were unbelievable and carried us offensively at the start where and looked like as if they were our veterans not first year players. You were cool and knowing what to do all the time which was amazing! With Lionel, you covered the outfield fantastically even through the difficult first 2 innings not allowing the ball to pass you after you could not catch it on the air.
I have seen professional games where after facing a 0-9 deficit the way we did; the pros seem to start focusing on the next game, not our RED Sox major leaguers. After a 0-9 they kept it positive, kept playing and turn the game around. With Sam on 3rd and Miguel on 2nd on the final inning we were one hit away from trying the game and the way Adam was pitching who know what would have happen after. Unfortunately we were facing a good team too and we roll it over to SS for the final game of the game. But I am proud. I am not sure if I should be having a nice feeling after a loss, but I have it. What a team we have!
Again all, even after this fantastic game and anything is eclipsed and not really important after the sad news we received of your state Mike. Hang in there coach! We missed you and hope we could see you soon with Matt, Ben and share better times, on the baseball field and everywhere else…
I am sure I speak for everyone in the Red Sox family when I say that our thoughts and prays are with you and your prompt recovery. See you soon!
Mets Vs Yankees
All pitchers did a great job for the Major Mets. Jordan Edmonds striking out 2 in the first innings, followed by 3 in the second innings. Will Chase pitched in the 3rd creating two outs at first and an unassisted out by a tag at first base. In the fourth he struck out 2 players, the third out at first by a throw down from 2nd base by Eleanor D'Cruze. Chris Nicholson took over as pitcher in fifth innings striking out 2 players and Adam Lamport, playing catcher, caught out the third. Chris pitched the final innings for the Major Mets where Elliott Wallace made a fantastic throw from third base to first base for an out, then Chris threw to first base for the second out and Tim Moore, playing catcher, caught out the third. Well done to all the Major Mets players on their first game of the season.
