Horsham Junior Baseball Club (HJBC)

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will it cost to play Baseball with HJBC in 2008?

Each child that plays in the Horsham Junior Baseball League will have to pay a one off registration fee. The costs for the 2008 season are:

    T-Ball League £45.00

    AAA League £50.00

    Minor League £55.00

    Major League £55.00

What does my child have to wear to play baseball?

Included with the registration fee is a uniform for each child that consists of:

    T-Ball League T-Ball T-Shirt and cap

AAA League AAA T-Shirt, cap and baseball pants (trousers)

Minor League Baseball shirt, cap, baseball pants (trousers), belt, socks and stirrups that go over the socks

Major League Baseball shirt, cap, baseball pants (trousers), belt, socks and stirrups that go over the socks

Are there game fees that I will have to pay each week?

No. There are no fees for games or practices. The registration fee is a one off payment to play baseball for the 2008 season.

Do I have to buy anything else for my child to play?

The registration fee includes a uniform for your child to wear as outlined above. It does not however include any specific baseball equipment i.e. bats or gloves. Whilst HJBC has a small selection of bats and gloves that children can use during the season we would encourage players to purchase their own equipment so that they can practice at home with family and friends. Details and prices for bats, gloves and other items of equipment can be ordered from the HJBC Equipment Catalogue.

I don’t live in the Horsham district. Can my son / daughter still play?

Yes. You do not have to live in the Horsham district to be able to play in the Horsham Junior Baseball League. We have children playing that live in Brighton, Chichester and Crawley.

I have a son who is 6 years old. Is he too young to play?

No. There will be four baseball leagues in 2008. The T-Ball League will be for children in school years 1 and 2 (6 & 7 year olds). The AAA League will be for children in school years 3 and 4 (8 & 9 year olds). The Minor League will be for children in school years 5 and 6 (10 & 11 year olds). The Major League will be for children in school years 7 and 8 (12 & 13 year olds).

I have got an 8 and 12 year old. Will they be playing in the same team?

The aim is for brothers and sisters to play on the same team eg Cubs or Mets, but the 8 year old would play for the Minor League team and the 12 year old would play for the Major League team. Practice sessions would be on the same evening for all age ranges of the same team.

Is it a game for boys only or can my daughter play?

Yes, your daughter can play. All four leagues are mixed so boys and girls can play together. In 2007, 189 children played and 32 (17%) of these players were girls.

My son / daughter has never played baseball before. Can he / she still play?

Yes. Players do not need to have any experience of playing baseball before as they will learn the game during the course of the season. Horsham Junior Baseball Club has introduced a player development program introducing a progress sheet for each kid to work on with the family on the weak parts of their game. It becomes a fun experience for the whole family.

How long will the baseball season last?

From April to August. The Try Outs for new players wanting to play in 2008, is on Saturday 29th March and players will be informed which team they will be playing for by Saturday 12th April. Practices will take place during May and the season will start on Saturday 14th June (opening day). Games will take place each Saturday until Saturday 23rd August (last week of league games) with a rest week on Saturday 5th July.

If my son / daughter plays, what will he / she be committing themselves to each week?

There will be one practice session each week and a game on a Saturday. The practice will be the same night each week with Red Sox training on Monday’s, Yankees training on Tuesday’s, Cubs training on Wednesday’s, Athletics training on Thursday’s and Mets training on Friday’s. The games on a Saturday usually last between 1 and 2 hours.

What time will the practices take place?

The T-Ball League team will train each week from 6.00pm – 7.00pm. The AAA, Minor and Major League teams will train from 6.00pm – 7.30pm.

What time will the games take place?

All the games will take place on a Saturday. The T-Ball and Minor League games will take place in the mornings. The AAA and Major League games will take place in the afternoons.

Where do the games take place? Will there be lots of travelling during the season?

The Horsham Junior Baseball League runs like a central venue league with all practices and games taking place at the same venue so you are only travelling to the same place rather than travelling to lots of different venues during the season. The venue for the 2008 baseball season is The Ben Vodden Field, Ingfield Manor School, Five Oaks, Billingshurst, RH14 9AX.

I would like to help out with the baseball. What jobs can I do?

Horsham Junior Baseball Club is always on the lookout for volunteers. We need head coaches, assistant coaches, team mums, scorers, umpires, people to help mark out the pitch and people to help keep the website up to date. If you would like to help or would like further information please contact Rob Burnie on 07920 574714 or Paul Taylor on 07764 146339.

When does the money have to be paid?

The 2008 registration fee must be paid before Friday 16th May at the very latest. HJBC has a number of scholarships available for childen who would otherwise not be able to join. For more information please contact Horsham Junior Baseball Club in confidence.
